Counting Blessings

May 4, 2016

Florida will always be my birthplace. Georgia will always be my hometown. But my name is written now in the ground of Hawaii. And in the same way, it's been written on my heart by God.

Sometimes I stop in wonder when I think of the course my life has been on. I can't believe that at twenty-one-years-old, I get to call this beautiful place "Home." That I get to live here for another season, doing the most satisfying and fulfilling work that I can imagine for myself. Some people spend their entire lives dreaming of that. Yet for some reason, before I was even a desire in my parents' hearts, God thought of me and declared over me, "This one's going to serve Me on the island man calls 'Hawaii.'" It humbles me again and again. God is so good. Even when we deserve His goodness the least.

Further still, I marvel at His wisdom and His provision. I purchased my flight ticket on credit this past weekend, having only an indefinite plan for earning the money I needed. I took a step of faith. But amidst the financial stress I had to surrender daily and my having no idea where the money would come from should my plan fail, my parents surprised me Monday evening with one of the greatest gifts: the announcement that they would pay for my one-way ticket back to Kona. But greater still even than the tremendous financial blessing is the gift behind it of their support of my pursuing the plans that God has for me, their blessing over me and the work I'm setting out to do, and their sacrificial love, denying their desire to keep me close in letting me go, in providing the means for me to return back to where I belong for now, and in allowing me to spread my wings and soar. How blessed I am to be loved so greatly by a mom and dad who show me every day of my life how abundantly my Father in Heaven loves me and delights in blessing His children.
